Project Summary

The five-star Mandarin Oriental Hotel is situated on Barahat Msheireb square and is the centrepiece of Msheireb Downtown quarter in Doha. The hotel is a 15-minute walk to Souq Waqif, Msheireb Museums, Al Corniche, and Amiri Diwan and is in close proximity to the West Bay business district. Hamad International Airport is a 30 minute drive away. As part of this urban redevelopment in the heart of Doha, the hotel provides 123 guest rooms, 35 suites, and 91 serviced apartments, banqueting and meeting facilities, several restaurants, ballroom, fitness centre, and retail outlets.

The building design was done by Burns & McDonnel in collaboration with John McAslan Partners, reinterpreting traditional Qatari architecture into a contemporary design with touches of Qatari heritage. The solid forms and linear design of the limestone façade, into which recesses, and openings are carved to protect the building’s interior from the harsh Doha heat, echo the design of the canopy and louvre system of Al Baraha square.

The interiors were designed by David Collins Studio and Jouin Manku which blend contemporary design with elements inspired by Qatari cultural, and historical references celebrating the cultural heritage of Doha, whilst embracing innovation and modernity.

To provide the guests with privacy during check-in, the main lobby is enclosed within a brass ’veil‘ which was fabricated by Grankraft. These awnings, canopies, and screens set a contrast to the solidity of the external façade whilst echoing the highly crafted level of detail of it. The total area of screens is 250m² with 1614 individual panels ranging in size from 250 to 4000mm in height. The screens are made of aluminium with a light antique brass finish.
